A centerless grinding machine is a machine tool specifically designed for high-precision, high-efficiency, high-volume cylindrical grinding of the external diameters of round parts.
The biggest difference between a centerless grinder and a conventional cylindrical grinder is this: The workpiece is not held or clamped by centers. Instead, it is placed between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel, and is located by its own outer surface during grinding.
Core Concept: What Does "Centerless" Mean?
The name "centerless" refers to the fact that the workpiece does not need to be located by its axis centerline (i.e., center holes).
Conventional cylindrical grinder: The workpiece is supported and driven by centers at both ends. Machining accuracy relies heavily on the accuracy of the center holes.
Centerless grinder: The workpiece is not fixed by centers. Instead, it rests "freely" between the grinding wheel and the regulating wheel. It is supported from below by a workrest blade, driven in rotation by the regulating wheel, and the actual cutting is performed by the grinding wheel.
No clamping required for ultra-high efficiency
Workpieces pass continuously through the grinding area in a through-feed manner. It saves plenty of time spent on frequent clamping and alignment needed by conventional machines, minimizing auxiliary time and boosting production efficiency.
Superior rigidity, ideal for slender shafts
Workpieces are fully supported by support plates and guide wheels, avoiding bending issues common in traditional center grinding. It is perfectly suitable for grinding slender shafts, short shafts without center holes, piston pins, and other similar parts.
Stable accuracy and easy automation
Workpieces are positioned by their outer circle without clamping errors. The roundness accuracy generally reaches 2μm, and high-precision models achieve 0.5μm; dimensional tolerance can be controlled within 4μm, down to 2μm for premium versions. It can be easily equipped with automatic loading and unloading systems to realize fully automated production.
Perfect for mass production
Once parameters are set, stable continuous production can be maintained for a long time. Centerless grinders are the preferred equipment for mass production of cylindrical parts in bearing, automotive, electronics, and other industries.
